The premier snowboard tour in America comes to Mt. Bachelor January 5-8, 2006
Bend, Ore. – Jan 3, 2006 This Thursday marks the beginning of the Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix at Mt. Bachelor. This is the seventh year Mt. Bachelor has hosted this national event. The Grand Prix will take place Thursday, January 5, 2006 through Sunday, January 8. Events include Slopestyle and Superpipe, with the Superpipe competition serving as a qualifier for this year’s Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.
The Grand Prix at Mt. Bachelor may prove to be the most competitive of the three stops in the Grand Prix Tour. Over 120 riders will vie for 30 spots, 20 men and 10 women, to compete at the Grand Prix to be held at Mountain Creek Resort in New York where the Olympic Team will be announced. The rider’s list for both events is impressive, attracting stellar athletes not only from the United States, but Australia, Great Britain and Canada as well. Crowd favorites such as X Games multi-gold medalist Shaun White, former Olympians Ross Powers and Danny Kass, Bend local Josh Dirksen and U.S. Snowboard Team member Steve Fisher are registered to compete on the men’s side. On the women’s side, U.S. Snowboard Team member and last year’s Overall Grand Prix Champion Lindsey Jacobellis and U.S. Snowboard Team member and the first place finisher at the Breckenridge Grand Prix, Hannah Teter are registered to compete.
This year’s Mt. Bachelor Grand Prix will award over $55,000 in prize money with first place in Men’s and Women’s Superpipe taking home $10,000 each.
The competition starts with Slopestyle on Thursday with men’s and women’s qualifiers. The Superpipe qualifiers will be all day Friday. The finals for Superpipe will be on Saturday, January 7 with warm-ups at 11:00 A.M. and the finals starting at noon. Finals for Slopestyle will be held on Sunday, January 8, with warm-ups again at 11:00 A.M. and finals starting at noon.
Spectating is free to guests, simply hike the 150 yards to the Superpipe.
